From memory, Lakoff notes that what is basic level will change for
different populations, depending on specialist knowledge - or lack of
it. The example given is that although most basic level categories in
biology occur at the species level – beech, pine, oak etc. – the
general term 'tree' might be a basic-level concept for city dwellers.
By the same token, discovering Goldwing Valkyrie as a basic level
category for a group would tell you an awful lot about them and how
they think.
