Alex,
I think everything business is run by the business side. Does
technology have an effect? does design? of course to varying degrees,
but the operators of a business, those who carry the purse strings are
the ones making the final call and often directing the conception of
the "the next big idea" ... Yes, there is a lot of innovation that
comes from technology but usually it takes the business side to
accept, understand, and formulate a strategy for how to use a
technology and make it happen. On the UI side this happens to a lesser
degree b/c today very few companies are doing innovation exploration
led from the design side. Some are, but indeed very few, and even
then, the business side has the final say about what to do and how to
do it.

I think this is why organizations like NextD and AIGA are putting
together programs that connect design to business. AIGA has a week
long 40 person educational program with Harvard Business School. NextD
has a 1 day workshop and an upcoming conference and then of course
AIGA has its regular GAIN conference on business and design.
