And key in this is simple - i.e. cheap. 

90% of the small annoyances in appliances could be solved with the
application of a little extra design and money applied to them (often, in
terms of materials used or complexity).

Ideas for *how* to improve things are a dime-a-dozen - everyone has them
(any driver has a dozen ways they could improve the operation of their car).
But usually they'll cost in terms of manufacturing. Who would buy a
coathanger if it were $5? Or a Neon with $50x50 little improvements?

(And to make this on topic) That's actually something that is a bigger deal
in industrial design than software design. It's not nearly as cost-intensive
to design software with those extras. Which is also why bad software design
is even less excusable than bad industrial design.
