Just wanted to recommend this book:

Design Research
 Methods and Perspectives
 edited by Brenda Laurel

This is a good book to have in your library for the next time you roll out
your full research tool box. It's packed with innovative research methods
from 40+ designers and academics in the form of well written essays and
case studies that nearly span the vastness of design practice. I think
it's fair to say that the collection is bent toward digital interactive
designers, but many of the methods are adaptable.

"Design Research" has a streak of activism as well, and the message to
reclusive, all-black-wearing designers is to take on the growing
importance of the designer's roll in technology, products, strategy and
the future.

I recommend "Speculation, Serendipity and Studio Anybody" by Lisa Grocott.
It's a funny case study on those kindred souls who can't help themselves
when it comes to mixing art and creativity with business metrics.
