I think the author Dale Hrabi is taking things too seriously. Either
s/he(hereafter assumed female) really thinks this is a serious,
straight-faced promo, or she knows it's not, and is merely sensationalizing
her outrage in an attempt to propogate it.
Like almost all advertizing today, it is somewhat tongue-in-cheek. (The best
example I've seen of self-denigrating self-important humour is the hair
product commercial whose hairspray features an exclusive "bendy-holdy"
technology.)
Starbucks is attempting to go with the flow instead of against it, when it
comes to its image. It's still a serious promo, but its message, by hitting
the stereotype head-on, deflects our cynicism to become amusement.
