[Sigia-l] [OT] Tagging things that are off topic

When a SIG-list deteriorates, subscribers go elsewhere. And when that
new venue is worn out or debased, subscribers find yet another place
to go. Ad infinitum.

But unlike trendy night spots, list-serves have pretty much the same
décor (read technical features). Hence, the patronage is what makes
the difference. So, why do patrons bother to migrate from one
identical venue to another? Do they really think the people they
don’t like won’t follow?

Certainly practicing greater self-discipline would be far easier than
either finding another “venue” or forcing our “bouncer” Dick Hill, to
make judgement calls on each and every mail.

To those who encourage the widest possible interpretation of IA,
honestly, I can only guess at how you tackle sitemaps. I have this
nightmarish vision of a menu with just one button - “Everything.” Be
reasonable – you know full well when you’re stretching a point to
justify inclusion on this list.

And to those who encourage tagging, do you really think these folks
will actually use the tags? Our central problem is that folks are
arguing that off-topic posts are actually ON-target! (or perhaps OT
really means On-Target?)

This list has already lost some valuable contributors. Let’s not lose
even more. In fact, wouldn’t it be nice if we actually grew?

Cheers,
Eric
