Hi Eric,

This reference from Karen A. Coombs may hopefully help you. She also has some interesting XML stuffs on her web site. Good luck!

XML-driven Periodical List

The library was struggling with how to incorporate our full-text access into its overall list of periodical holdings. Full-text access to resources can be obtained in many ways: as an electronic only subscription, as an add-on to a print subscription, or as “incidental” access provided via a subscription database such as Gale’s Expanded Academic. Some libraries have chosen to catalog all of the electronic versions of their periodicals. However, others have chosen only to catalog those resources to which they specifically subscribe. This is because “incidental” full-text coverage for databases such as Expanded Academic changes on a regular basis creating a maintenance nightmare.

In addition, our physical holdings are not in the OPAC. Therefore, it was decided to consolidate these lists and make them searchable using a combination of XML and database-driven webpage technologies. This was meant to be a temporary solution while our periodical holdings were being put in the OPAC. However, this project has been so successful that this may be a more permenent solution to consolidating print, microform, and electronic holdings. By creating a single interface, users are not able to search our holdings (electronic, print or microform) for a particular magazine or journal.
