The distinction between generalist and specialist is about breadth
versus depth. But both the generalist and specialist share one thing
in common - the understanding of field basics.

For a field known as Information Architecture, what is more basic then
distinguishing information from data. After all, that field has long
been insisting that information is not data.

Thus, IMO, people who cannot tell information from data are not
genuine Information Architects. Unless they have such basic skill, the
distinction of whether they are IA generalists or IA specialists is
pointless.
