I've stopped deciphering how people think long time ago. :-)

I was recently talking to a potential client (whose partially in the search
field) and most of the conversation revolved around what they saw as the
next big thing: intent.

With every click and search, they want to decipher what the user's "intent"
is, even more so than what the user's "action" was.

I'm not unfamiliar with the notion of "intent", but I haven't been able to
read anything rigorous. Has anyone?
