Can anyone suggest some creative tasks to have participants perform in a
website usability test?

Dan,

One of my favorite things to do when conducting a usability test on a site
with limited functionality is to have the user look at the home page and
ask open ended questions before they even click. Ask questions that will
help you determine if the labels you've chosen and the images you've
provided give a clear indication as to what content they represent. Some
examples (Looking at homepage): What do you think this site is about? What
do you think it is for? How would you navigate? If you clicked that, what
do you think would happen? What would you expect to find? You get the
idea...

Then let them click.

After they click try and determine if what they expected to happen
actually did happen or if they are suprised or confused. Surprise and
confusion after they click could be an indication that you need to rethink
your labels or navigation.

-Good luck
