[Sigia-l] Registration-only sites

I'm sure you've been reading reports about the recent proliferation of sites
(especially news-oriented ones) that now require registration:

We've actually had this for a while at the dawn the web, then people saw the
futility of it all and opened up. I guess it's coming back.

My question is, if you worked on a site that went from open to registration,
what reasons did the management give to justify/require it?
