Denise,

You  might also try using the Nemeth Code.  It's a spoken math protocol
developed by Dr. A. Nemeth to articulate mathematical expressions in spoken
language.  We used this to develop a spoken math version (in straight HTML)
of a particular formula-intensive document.  It looks funny but sounds right
- if you speak spoken math.

I'm curious - how do speaking browsers render MathML anyway?
