[Sigia-l] Taxonomy/Classification IA and Enterprise IA

"There definitely are plenty of data/software
designers/architects who have facility in IAish things such as
taxonomy/classification. I think it probably comes down to who is most
familiar with the end users of the content being displayed, along with
who
has the most facility in understanding how the content is and should be
stored managed etc., as well as what the current and future purpose of
the
product is. If there are enough members of a technology team who have
the
skills and understanding for taxonomy/classification, then yes that role
could be subsumed into a number of related disciplines from the
technology
perspective."

I think one of the issues may be that as far as "Enterprise IAs" or
"those-who-design-and-maintain-taxonomies" goes is that there are
probably at least three different types of folks who need to be involved
in the process of designing and maintaining an enterprise taxonomy or
schema. These include:

DB Architects who have spent a lot of time designing and are intimately
aware of the capabilities/limitations of various systems but not
necessarily in a position to represent the end user.

IAs of various flavors who are in charge of the representing the users
and understanding their needs, but may not have the expertise to "get
down into the bits" or the expertise to design large enterprise
categorization plans.

The Library Science folks with the expertise in creating and managing
large organizations schemes...

It is essential that all three of these perspectives be represented when
approaching this on an enterprise wide level. Without all three of
these perspectives an initiative is likely to fall short do to a poor
understanding of the end user, the actual systems required to meet the
requirements, or a poorly designed taxonomy. Whether or not you need
three individuals or groups involved is another point.

Ziya,

I hear what you are saying, and my thoughts are definitely based on my
own
biases/experiences thus far.

Interesting. You see "site map+interactivity" subsumed by other
(related)
disciplines, but same thing cannot happen to "taxonomy/classification"?
Many
data/software designers/architects would disagree with you.
