I should also point out that even in the graphic design world, pitching
three ideas to the client usually ain't the best way to choose a design.

When I was a print designer, the rule of thumb was that the client would
invariably choose the worst design.

Again, my intended point was regarding the value of being expected to
explore alternatives as a matter of routine practice -- and not on having
clients choose which one to use.

Iteration does some of that. But often iteration focuses on trying to
optimize a particular direction than in exploring different strategic
approaches to the problem at hand.
