Actually #2 is almost exactly what Amazon does at the bottom of their
pages. It's the "browse for [product type] in," which is really showing
you the related facets. See for example
<http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0884271153/qid=1047414005/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/102-2474849-1920156?v=glance&s=books>

They don't do #1, but that actually might be useful, given that Amazon's a
poster-child for when street signs/breadcrumbs/whatever are useful. Wide
and deep site, lots of people either deep linking, or "deep drilling" via
the home page search.

Corporate intranets are another likely candidate, although they involve
significant challenges in coming up with a categorization scheme(s) that
could support the Amazon-style approach.
