This has nothing to do with the actual behavior/preferences inherent to
the consumer, only with what the mechanics-of-circumstance dictate. In
this way this is not really a Human Factors issue -- it is a political
one.
Nevertheless, the success of monopolies suggests something, at least in
part, is being provided by these companies which serves the preservation
of our being, otherwise, they would not exist *because* no one desires
it.
*Duration* will see these things through (i.e. even 'Ma Bell' eventual
gets busted open for the common good; even Big Tobacco must die). Quite
simply, that which endeavors to destroy our being (i.e. manipulative
behavior) will not be cultivated (i.e. no duration) since to do so would
be absurd.
