It's deja vu all over again! Twenty years ago, the engineering community was
really upset at the use of the term "software engineering" to describe what
programmers were doing. I don't recall the specifics, but it's obvious the
engineering community wasn't successful. If the OH lawyers want to follow
this up as a precedent, they might want to check with the Software Engineering
Institute at CMU (http://www.sei.cmu.edu/).
One thing the software engineers had going for them was the government
(who funded a lot of software engineering research as a way to generate
better software products). At the time, the universities were able to get
lots of grants with their existing computer science departments.
Perhaps we need some government-funded IA research? Hello, LIS schools!
