I wouldn't say, as Derek has, that the Google algorithm is "simple", but
one could argue that such algorithms could have been written by a
computer science student 20 years ago -- that is, if they could in their
wildest dreams imagine having access to computers as powerful as those
we have today. The key earth-shattering advancements in information
technology are mostly in the hardware: speed, storage capacity, and
networked-ness. 

Some argue that software development has gotten worse and worse over the
years as developers more and more rely on processor power to compensate
for sloppy and re-used code. 

Still, I'm sure that we'll see some really cool advancements in software
soon, particularly in such areas as Karl suggests such as genetic
algorithms and such. Cutting edge programming has a lot of existing
knowledge to build from. All I'm saying is that the majority of today's
programmers are operating in a paradigm that is fundamentally unchanged
for the past few decades.
