Creating efficient objects /is/ quite difficult and usually a vector of
experience/time.

I'm against IAs using UML to indicate functionality to developers. As a
developer I wouldn't want my objects and schemas defined by an IA. As an IA
I don't want to spend an inordinate amount of time and energy to do
something that's best left in the domain of developers. I haven't seen too
many IAs who are either interested in or capable of generating UML that's
worth much. The best thing an IA can do for the developer is to create a
functional prototype that demonstrates without ambiguity the functionality
desired. It's then the developer's job to realize that in code, in whatever
language/paradigm they feel comfortable in.

I doubt there are more than a handful IAs here who would be comfortable
doing that.

That's a very difficult line to draw, like being a little pregnant.
I'll take a prototype over UML any day.
