This is (partially) why God created RSS. :-) It's a light-weight "change
notification" system. The emission can be as simple as a single word, a
longer description or even the entire text of the document, plus images.
It's a "pull" system in that a client has to request to see what's changed,
but it'd be trivial to poll often via automation to make it look like a
continuous "push." The specs are currently in flux, but a workable system
can be easily built with what's already here.

You're prescient asking this question. The exec-level info should be
abstracted as much as possible. But it's again trivial to build a system
that sequentially reveals on demand. First you get just a list of docs that
changed -> click on a title and get a brief description -> click on that to
get a longer description, and so on.
Now, obviously, it all depends on the nature/volume of the material,
frequency of changes, the audience, etc. On a busy system, it'd be easy to
overwhelm the users.
