When we're talking about CMS and IA - don't forget that the CMS is for a
client (most of the time).
In my opinion the challenges of Content Management Systems fall in two main
categories: Integration and Distribution/Presentation.
1) Back-end integration with other systems. Clients will want their existing
systems to work seamlessly with the CMS. They may have publishing systems
for print, quality control and so on. Surely they have an ERP system with
clients, employees and so on. Make your CMS easily integrate!
2) Handling and presentation of content. Clients will want to be able to
easily syndicate and share their content - and vice versa. I know there are
"emerging standards" in the field. RSS, XFML, .NET. But not all CMS's have
"discovered" this. Also clients want to be able to present content on other
platforms like wearable, mobile and so on - which is easily handled by these
standards.
When you say "old hat", we've been doing so for years and years - you may be
right. But it is not the point. My clients want a system that gives them
control of the content - as users and administrators - not as developers.
That said: Clients also face challenges. They must learn to understand
categorization and be able to differentiate between content and
presentation. That is not always easy.
