The closed room approach is, imho, closely related to the business model
of these companies. Consulting brings revenue. Closed box = more
consulting, upgrades and lock-in, despite the lip-service to XML and
open standards. It's about increasing lock-in. Opening up their CMS so
categorization (and maybe other functions) could be easily done by other
tools would mean commodotizing their own product, not something that's
likely to happen.
Technologies like XTM (topicmaps), btw, promise exactly that kind of
semantic layer you describe.
