We've run the evolt.org list for 4 years now without any moderation. And 
it's got over 3500+ web developers on it, with a truckload more traffic 
than this one.

Flames are quickly extinguished, often without any admin's intervention.

Steve Champeon (on this list still?) runs wd-l without any moderation too, 
and I think he's got some 1700+ members.

So I disagree that all lists *eventually* need moderation.

I dislike moderated lists because a list that needs moderation, to me, says 
that the members can't be trusted to follow mailing list etiquette. (That's 
also why I'm not on CHI-WEB any more. That, and the silly "reply to me and 
I'll summarise" ways. But I digress...)

All IMHO, of course.
