[Sigia-l] IBM Reinvents E-mail

As someone who used Lotus Notes mail for several years what strikes me
mostly is their integration of products that already existed at Lotus (Notes
email, message board-like functionality, Sametime chat, etc) into a single
product. Their chat client was not integrated when I last used it in 2002,
so I may be behind on that, I'm not sure.

The visualizations in this demo look a lot like research that was presented
at Lotusphere in 2002, particularly the chat function and the icon showing
whether a person is currently online. It is convenient if you need
something from someone. Less so if you are the person barraged with
requests. The demo in 2001 showed a chat product integrated with a
directory, so anyone at an organization could look up and contact anyone
else at any time and send IMs. At the time, I was one of those resource
type persons and felt somewhat threatened by it - wanted a way to select
which people can have access to that information (I think they have that
here). On the other hand if you are working with a remote staff, it is
helpful to know that you can reach someone.

For all the marketing nonsense about productivity, I am not sure how this
makes people feel less urgent about answering messages. I avoid instant
messaging as much as possible for that reason. At least you can choose to
ignore or answer email on your own time.
