ANY company/designer worth its/his/her salt performs user research on one level or another to provide a *basis* for the design of their product. key word: basis. the problem in this case seems to be that microstupid doesn't weigh the importance of security correctly.

if the user population expresses the want/need for xyz features, buy y creates a security issue... well, it kind of seems obvious how to proceed from there. if microsoft is asking users about whether or not they should leave a particular port open, they're probing on a task level and not a goal level. their end product will undoubtedly suffer and in this case, the economy with it.
