Advantages?

It simply brings the perception of depth to 2D. You can embed a lot of
useful info into the depth cue.

Warnings?

They are somewhat more difficult to create and maintain, especially if
you're not used to pre-planning.

But the most important issue with isomaps is that people sometimes put so
much time and effort into these artifacts that a) the client might get
turned off by how much they are paying you to mess with them and b) your
time might be better utilized in creating a fully functional prototypes.

They are lovely to look at, though.
