What I was objecting to was the comparison between desktop *apps* and web
*sites*. While the demarcation line keeps getting blurred, it is still
easier to create static sites than dynamic apps. So that's a bit of an
unfair pairing.

The same can also be said of web apps. Or are you implicitly saying then
that we've reached a plateau on web apps?
Leaving aside Flash MX, it looks like we won't see much improvement on UI
widgets for the web. MS is no longer interested in the web browser. SVG is
taking forever to get traction. On the functionality and ease of development
front, things may get much better if XForms could get here sometime in this
century.
So that really leaves us with the mindset of designers/developers, which
you've admirably summarized. There, I get depressed. The vast majority of
corporate apps are still designed by programmers, you know those with the
"C++ guru and Photoshop wizard" job req. Most projects start with them...and
end with them. I don't see much enthusiasm or money to spend on improving
that situation in business. It's a sad situation given the enormous need and
potential.
