I didn't meant to imply that hands-on learning isn't valuable, nor that it
gives a greater depth of understanding. But book learning is better than no
learning at all. ('Course book learning runs the risk of a little knowledge
becoming a dangerous thing...)

Absolutely.

That's what makes our professions challenging. We don't need to be masters
of all trades, but if we're going to be the bridge between them, we need to
be familiar with a lot of different areas.
