Andrea,
I think it's great that you show this much interest in IA, but remember that
the difficulties you face are not just yours and they are also not caused by
the members of this list.
When I started working with IA, it was equally unknown in my country, which
was nothing but encouragement to make an extra effort and help disseminate
the subject locally.
Coming from Costa Rica, you should be thankful for being able to access all
the great information available online and offline in Spanish - privilege
not many people share. I could say that the Spanish-speaking community has
the greatest number of works and articles out there after those in English.
If you don't know where to start, try www.mantruc.com (Javier Velasco, IA in
Chile).
Apart from this, Jeff's comment was a reference so we could better evaluate
what has changed in a year, not to shut you up. Perhaps you lost that in
translation :) Here's a tip from someone who also doesn't not have English
as a first language: pay twice as much attention.
You should also know that even though much of the work on IA in concentrated
in the United States, lots of people have been trying to spread the word
around the globe (learn more: www.aifia.org). Apart from this, there are
lots of Information Architects out there in the world who are doing all
those same extra sacrifices you mentioned to achieve that. So join in
instead of ostracizing yourself.
cheers,
Livia Labate
