Humans with a need often cannot put
their finger on it. Recalls the case
of the scientist coming to the library
asking for a search on "bees" ... it
turned out he was looking for a wax
to cement transistors.

A person can recognize what he/she
wants when he/she sees it, but humans
are not very good at describing what
they want. So maybe a good question
to put to a client is "can you show
me a site that is close to what you
want.." And then tell me what it lacks.

Finding the kernel needs, I don't know
of any methodology to do that. Maybe
it is a skill in interviewing and
observing..
