You are being overly charitable: it's almost never financially possible.

(This was beaten to death about 18 months ago in a thread here but it's
instructive to remember) especially if you are an outside consultant, the
IA's customer/client is the company (that signs his check) without which the
IA doesn't even get to reach the 'user'.
To me this is pretty self-evident and uninteresting. What's interesting is
the notion that if IAs want to restructure that relationship, focusing
simply on a narrow range of taxonomic minutiae (as a profession) is not
going to be very helpful in the hierarchy of decision making in an
organization and on a project. An IA cannot 'champion' the user without
first 'championing' the client and its commercial interests.
