Talk summary and biography

"What Does Usability Mean - Five Dimensions of User Experience"
Definitions of usability often seem either too narrow to be useful in
guiding practical decisions, or so broad that they lack focus. In a search
for a definition of usability, I identified five dimensions of usability,
based on some of existing lists of attributes: effective, efficient,
engaging, error tolerant, and easy to learn. These "5Es" can be used to
help a team understand user requirements, make appropriate design
decisions, and plan usability evaluations. The evening's presentation will
look at how to use the 5Es to understand the balance needed a specific
project and to drive the design to match these user requirements.
Whitney Quesenbery designs interfaces for projects from web sites to
applications and helps companies implement a user experience capability to
improve the usability of their products. As a principal at Cognetics, her
projects ranged from the original HP LaserJet 4 Travel Guide to hospital
management software, web applications and corporate information tools. She
is on the board of directors of the UPA and is the web-master for the
popular STC Usability SIG web site. She can be reached at
