During my consulting days we did a knowledge management project for a Big 5 firm where we used DC as the basis for a metadata record (to be associated with anything that went into the KM repositories). DC attributes made up the core or required fields and more detailed or industry-specific fields could be added at each group's discretion.  This way everything that ended up in the many KM repositories was guaranteed to have at least the same basic fields.
