I recently met Gerry at Intracom 2002 in Montreal where he gave an
excellent keynote. 

If I remember correctly from talking with him, he does come from a
publishing background. He also ran a company that built a CMS which
they later sold (the product is still around).

He's very knowledgeable about information architecture issues, but
he comes at it from the publishing perspective, not the LIS or HCI
side (or whatever other field you think is relevant).
