My bank has a nice approach to handling this. Although it's got a
10-minute timeout, 60 seconds before it times out, they open a pop-up
window that warns you that your session is about to expire and lets you
either continue working (by clicking).

If you get timed out, the pop-up window remains open with a message that
explains what happened and that it was done for security reasons.
