Things are still being worked out, but here's what's probably happening.
There are going to be two AIfIA mailing lists (for now).
1) A bi-weekly newsletter. Features include:
- One-way (from AIfIA to you)
- One mailing every two weeks (first mailing scheduled for ~ Nov 19)
- Free; open to all
- Content will include updates from AIfIA, our partners and members,
and other newsletter-only content
- More info will be available on the site and announced in the newsletter

2) A mailing / discussion list focusing on AIfIA issues. Features
include:
- Subscription is limited to current members only
- Anyone who is subscribed can post
- Discussion of initiatives, organization and direction of AIfIA
- More info will be available on the site and provided to subscribers

Again, these are NOT finalized and are subject to change (hence why
we didn't really advertise them much yet).
The announcement list is for anyone -- IA or otherwise -- to keep
up on what's going on with AIfIA and with our partners. It will be
especially useful for those who don't keep up on mailing lists and
blogs.
The discussion list is not meant to replace SIGIA-L by any means.
It will provide a forum for the Board, Leadership Council, and members
to discussion AIfIA-specific project, initiatives, and issues.
> will this be the default list of the AIfIA?
If by "this" you mean SIGIA-L -- no. We may possibly post updates
here on a very limited basis, but we certainly don't intend to rely
on this list for what will hopefully be regular announcements and
news.
Those URLs, in case you missed 'em before, are:
- Newsletter: free, bi-weekly, open to all
--> http://lists.ibiblio.org/mailman/listinfo/aifia-announce
- Members-only list centered around discussion of AIfIA initiatives,
projects, news, and related, um, things
--> http://aifia.org/signup/index.php
Please respond personally if you have any questions.
