About four years ago, Douglas Adams spoke to a conference of web developers that I attended. One thing that he said has stuck with me over the years:
Cherish your limitations while you still have them.
I thought that was incredibly wise. There are few things so intimidating as a blank piece of paper. By setting limitations, parameters, boundaries, standards, you define a starting place. Once you understand the reasons for the boundaries, then you can push them as needed. I've been developing web sites since 1993 and I'm still exploring the area within the boundaries. (Maybe I'm just slow....)
For a good example of limitations spurring creativity, check out <http://www.the5k.org/>. 5 kilobytes, that's it.
