Yes, the innie/outtie thing again, although it sounds a lot like
discussions of bellybuttons. <insert contemplating naval joke here.> I'm
an outside consultant that has worked on IA mostly on a contract basis,
right now on a long-term engagement with Verizon. In general, the bottom
line is getting the job done and being employed. If this means considering
full-time, I consider it. I do find it hard to manage the time of several
jobs at once; there's only so many 50 hour weeks to go around.
Interestingly enough, I wound up on this assignment as the agency (large
prof. svcs. firm) was closing out their IA engagement and the customer was
looking to bring someone onboard 'inhouse.' So I'm inhouse outtie I guess.
As for continuing a project through, a lot of it depends on the company.
If a company can keep a consultant around more than 6 months, the
consultant will prob. see something get launched and revised and live and
breathe. I've been on too many jobs where nothing launches, but lots of
sitemaps and prototypes are wrought.
