So the definitive unbreakable rule should be, "never blindly follow rules."

But seriously, yes, rule of thumb. Heuristics that need to be applied 
in each individual situation. If applying a rule, understand it's 
underlying reason and check to see that following the rule has value 
to your users. Also check to see if breaking the rule has some value 
- you never know.
