The particular German-engineered product catalog module I referenced earlier
completely lacked this functionality. When I asked to be able to do what you
describe, the developers looked at me as if I were talking about some kind
of futuristic sci-fi magic. They ended up saying that they did have another
module that should help us with something like that, but nobody on their
current dev team knew how to implement it. They would have to fly in some
specialist from the Black Forest or someplace to deal with it.
Eventually it was simply determined to be 'out of scope'... (!) Yep, you
heard me right... Basic relational database functionality was out of scope
on a 5 million dollar product catalog.
I couldn't believe they were getting away with selling this crap. But as it
turns out, they keep selling it, and keep getting praised as one of the top
e-business vendors.
I better shut up before I get sued. But I'm still pissed about it. We had a
terrific architecture & design that would've done wonders, and these
medieval bozos fouled it up with their backward cpu-centric
simplemindedness.
