Lifestreams usually appears in the HCI literature and is sometimes
referenced in information visualization.

Gelernter wrote a book called "Mirror Worlds" about ten years ago
describing many of these problems (unread by me, but it's on my
shelf and I plan to read it this fall). I hear the book is excellent
and something of a minor classic (though his other books were not as
well received).
