Karl,

It's not quite the same thing, but I *really* suggest you read Bill 
Bryson's A Walk In The Woods, which is about walking the Appalachian 
Trail. It's one of the funniest books I ever read. (I was laughing so 
hard, that the flight attendant told me I was bothering the lady in 
front of me.)

In the first few chapters, he talks about the chances of meeting 
bears and what happens when you do. Very Very Funny.
