Oh, I know, I'm being academic there. It's fun to look at info as if 
it's 3D. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with looking at it 
that way, I do it all the time. I just like to know what things 
really are and why I'm representing it one way over another.

Telling info junkies this is a bit like stealing the Tooth Fairy, but 
the Web  is not even 2D... Truth be told it's barely 1D. Any 
structure we give it is for our own pleasure.

Due to our reliance on binocular vision it's extremely convenient to 
represent hierarchies as dimensional objects; it makes them much more 
tangible, and that's OK.

The greatest effect of the whole 3-d/isometric thing is the 
"Thickness of the book" factor it gives Web sites. "How much stuff is 
there" and "How long will it take me to wade through that 
chapter/section". In a way the 3D (and I'm using the term loosely) 
makes the presentation more "analog".
