sorry, I meant that as a handwave to an old philosophical discussion, thus
the tree in the woods comment---

information and experience are held in the recipient, yet we design in hopes
of giving that recipient what we wish them to have... we have to try. Or
else why paint, write books, make movies or do anything? We design in hopes
of giving what we have within to another, with the knowledge we may not
succeed and the knowledge we have to try anyhow. I think on this we all
agree.

Still, experience design as it is currently defined in the ED community, in
my opinion, is simply Design with an unnecessary appendage-- and design is
one of the fine things one can do with your life, be it industrial,
information, graphic, or other...

If experience design referred to The Star Trek Experience, Disneyland, the
st. suprey tour, the bellagio, the Winchester mystery house (in its current
incarnation) and other multi-sensory input designs, I think I might
understand it better...

User experience design places it in the realm of the digital, since we call
our customers users-- then it includes not only IA, ID, ID, GD but also
customer service, package delivery, etc... and thus again is tightly enough
defined that a new word actually adds context and thus value as a
term...maybe...

But when we define these things (Ed, UX, and even IA) to mean everything, we
are just confusing the issue by making up new names.

How is experience design different from Design?

Happy new year by the way, hope you all design a wonderful evening for
yourself. Don't forget to design the morning as well-- place water and
alka-seltzer on the bedside table. ;-)
