Of course anyone wanting to use Quark and MacOS X would say that privately
held companies can often move too slowly too.
Sometimes a little kick in the a** is a good thing. Of course working at a
public company now, I can say that quarterly releases is definitely a
killer for designers.

Something that most folks forget to take into account when discussing
Google is that they are a privately owned company. I will be interested to
see how they change if/when they go public. Stockholder pressure for quick
return creates bad decision making environments.
