This morning's edition of NPR's Talk of the Nation featured a travel expert who said that right now better deals are available directly from the airlines than from the online services. (Somehow related to the actual and anticipated bankruptcy filings...)

And who says, the Internet couldn¹t make airline pricing experts out of mere
mortals :-) I mean, really! Five-six years ago the best you could do was to
call the airline or talk to an agent. Just last week I had to listen to a
half-hour long dinner conversation between two ordinary people about the
intricacies of Orbitz vs. Travelocity pricing, ticket availability, etc.
This Internet thing might just work ;-)
