I'm assuming there are personal-use search engines out there that serve the
same function as, say, Atomz does for small websites. Where's Avi Rappoport
when you need her? :-)
I dealt with a similar problem for a publishing client a few years ago. For
a custom app I was developing, they needed arbitrary indexing/retrieval
capabilities. The client was adding docs to be processed at the rate of
several dozen per day and just didn't want to manually index them.
There were expensive packages out there. What I ended up doing was to
integrate Apple Sherlock's content indexing functionalities into the app. It
had hit relevance and content summary functions. It could index Windows NT
directories, I believe. It came free with Mac OS. Once set up, it was pretty
much transparent and painless to use. At least one Mac email client still
uses Sherlock as its indexing/search engine. I haven't used this aspect of
Sherlock in the past three years, so I don't know what the state of its API
is.
Best,
Ziya
