One of my mother's stories:

1959, freshman registration, Purdue University (Indiana). The boy ahead of
her in line was about to be registered into Remedial Speech by the
registration lady when the lady at the next table leaned over and
whispered loudly, "Don't, it's okay. He's from New York."
