[Sigia-l] (off topic) book question

Here's a question: when I use a website to illustrate something in a book,
do I need to ask their permission? Should I? And who should I ask? What if
they don't respond? My publisher tells me I need a signed paper for each
website, does that sound ok? (It just sounds a bit strange to me) Or are
they just covering themselves legally? I'm just not sure what normal
accepted practice is in this case...

Yahoo has a media relations department:
http://docs.yahoo.com/info/copyright/permission.html
You must ask them permission and include complete samples of each proposed
use. So that means I have to do all my case studies before, and then ask
permission. And what about sites that don't have a department like that?
Any real life tips?
