No, it's just that the way HTML was defined (with limited controls) means 
you have to build these controls yourself, and people have limited 
imagination and billable hours. You can have your javascript programmers 
write something that will allow for text entry or dropdown selection (or 
there are some good libraries out there), but it of course won't be a UI 
standard like the widgets built into HTML (dropdowns, checkboxes, ...).

On a related note, I was disappointed to see that the new Flash IU controls 
only included these standard HTML form control widgets, and not some of the 
others that are really missing. Now everyone will still write their own 
advanced widgets, and standardisation will be not as complete.
